Aunties Place - 1st Place Couch Design, Couch Surfing 2024

Updated: Apr 22

Riece led workshops at Aunties Place, guiding a group of young men to create a unique couch for the annual Couch Surfing event. This initiative, hosted by Anglicare NT and the City of Darwin on Youth Homelessness Matters Day, aims to shed light on the critical issue of youth homelessness. Participants from various youth groups and schools come together to race and showcase their creatively decorated couches, turning a fun day into a powerful statement about the need for safe, stable housing for all young people.

This year, the event was held on 17 April at Civic Park, drawing a large crowd from 10:30 am to 2 pm. The atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm as community members supported the young designers and their vibrant entries. Not only was it a day of excitement and friendly competition, but it also offered educational stalls and activities that emphasised the importance of addressing youth homelessness—a plight that too many young Australians face.

The boys from Aunties Place, supported by Riece from Intrepid Designers NT, not only participated but also shone brightly, clinching the 'Best Dressed Couch' award. The recognition was a testament to their creativity and hard work, reflecting the event’s spirit of community and support. Such initiatives underscore the importance of collective efforts in tackling significant social issues, and the success of the Couch Surfing event serves as a reminder of the ongoing need to advocate for and support vulnerable youth in our society.
